Columbia man charged with drunk driving in hit-and-run incident

Driving while intoxicated in the state of Tennessee can result in some serious consequences. Someone could lose a license, be required to pay fines or even spend time in jail. However, if a person is injured or dies in an accident involving drunk driving, the consequences could be much more dire. A Columbia man was recently charged for his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run fatality that occurred in Dec. 2016.

According to police reports, a 50-year-old man from Columbia had been riding his bicycle when he was hit by a vehicle from behind. The man was discovered at the scene with several injuries. Medical personnel treated him at the site of the accident, but he later died.

The driver was reportedly found in a nearby town. He was arrested and taken to the Maury County Jail following an indictment by a grand jury. The man faces charges of driving under the influence, vehicular homicide by recklessness and leaving the scene of an accident. He was also charged with failure to report involving death and a violation of the Tennessee implied consent law. A $100,000 bond was posted; however, the man remained in jail.

When facing charges of drunk driving and other offenses, it is important to remember that everyone has the right to present a defense. A Tennessee criminal defense attorney can be a valuable ally throughout the legal process. A knowledgeable lawyer will thoroughly evaluate any evidence, ensuring that all procedures were followed properly in its acquisition. A strong defense team will work toward achieving the best outcome possible in the proceedings.
